About Wayne

Wayne is  a 5th generation potter.  Wayne's father, Carl and

grandfather, Maryland (Bud) Hewell were traditional  folk potters.  Wayne

has been making pottery for over 31 years. He continues a family tradition

of making all pottery by hand and firing it in an old fashioned

wood burning kiln.   Wayne makes wonderful works of art at his home  in

Gillsville, Georgia and uses several glazes including albany slip, tobacco

spit, red and blue glazes.

As you can see from the picture below, Wayne enjoys teaching his grandson Landon

how to make pottery.  In the picture below he is teaching him how to  center the clay

on the wheel. Landon is only five but enjoys playing in the mud with Papa Wayne!

Wood Burning Kiln

Below is a  recent picture taken after a kiln burning.  Wayne is removing the pottery 3-4 days after the kiln burning.  The kiln will hold approximately 75 pieces of pottery.

It takes approximately 6-8 hours to burn a kiln to cone 10 which means the temperature has reached 2300 degrees farenheit.

It takes several days for the temperature to decrease to the point you can enter the kiln to remove the pottery.
